The study adopted a survey design approach. The population for this study consisted of undergraduate students from two universities, thus, one private university (Valley View University–VVU) in Techiman in the Bono Region and one public university (Ghana Communications Technology University) in Takoradi, in the Western Region. The study used 5% of the population to arrive at a sample size of 381. The stratified and simple random sampling techniques were applied to select the students. A well–structured questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. The study established that social media had negatively affected their English writing skills, which is detrimental to their academic performance. The results showed that most students visited social media platforms daily and spent more time on these platforms. The study identified challenges like; lack of personal security and privacy, poor internet services, unreliable power, the cost of internet connectivity, and many others. The study made recommendations to the management of both universities to organise workshops and seminars and educate students on the dangers of excessive use of social media platforms. Using annual time-series data from 1976 to 2020, we estimate the long-term impact of human capital development on nonrenewable energy consumption in Ghana. The objective of all occupational health and safety programmes is to promote a safe work environment. The oil and gas industry is one of the riskiest industries when it comes to health and safety of employees. It is in the light of this that this study takes a look at the impact and challenges of occupational health and safety in the oil industry taking Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) as a case study. The study seeks to identify factors that cause accidents in the oil and gas industry, assess the impact and challenges of occupational health and safety in the industry, identify effectiveness of workers compensation on health and safety matters and measures required to minimize the risk of exposure to occupational health and safety hazards. Questionnaire were designed on these objectives and distributed to a sample size of GOIL staff from various departments with different backgrounds and experiences. Responses from respondents were coded and analyzed using statistical tools to arrive at various findings. The study indicated that the major causes of accident in the oil and gas industry include the non-use of protective clothing and equipment, inadequate health and safety training and education, and no refusal of employees to execute unsafe work. Challenges of occupation health and safety outlined by the study include poor recordings and reporting of accidents and occupational diseases, lack of funds and health and safety expertise and lack of support medical care and counseling. The study also showed that the main workers compensation on health and safety matters includes medical care, disability income and rehabilitative services and death benefits. Effective training on the use of equipment, health and safety education and training and dissemination of health and safety information are the main strategy identified by the study as measures to reduce risk of exposure to occupational health and safety hazards in the oil and gas industry. To achieve this, a suitable mathematical drying model based on the Luikov’s model of heat and mass transfer in a capillary porous medium, were derived, to define the drying behavior of the bed. A heat source term was introduce in the energy equation due to the enzymatic browning reaction in cocoa beans during drying. The result-ing coupled heat and mass transfer equations were discretized using the finite difference method based on the notation of control volume. An algorithm was created to implement this solution into a computer program using a complex of Rapid a p-plication development tools which include Visual Studio, CodeFluent Entities and MATLAB. The algorithm was implemen t-ed in MATLAB 7.12 and was later exported through COM into Visual Basic.NET code for further development of the simu-lator in Visual Studio 2010. A logical model of the database was developed using the Graphical Modeler in CodeFluent Entities and later exported into a physical MS SQL Server database. The simulator will serve as a powerful decision making tool, that will be useful for engineers or operators to develop optimum drying conditions to improve the quality of cocoa beans and the final cocoa products.
